CitationSimon Boulton has made important discoveries in the genome stability field. In his early career he discovered the importance of non-homologous end-joining in preventing error-prone repair and in maintaining telomeres. More recently, he has made a series of seminal contributions that define how Homologous Recombination (HR) is controlled in complex eukaryotes. His discovery of RTEL1 as a key regulator of HR and subsequent insights into its role in meiosis and during DNA replication, laid the foundations for his ground-breaking work on the function of RTEL1 at telomeres. His work has had a fundamental impact on our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that maintaining[sic] the integrity of chromosome ends, whilst also providing unexpected insights into the underlying causes of telomere dysfunction disorders and genetic instability in human cancers.
