Citation | Peter Goadsby put research into migraine and other primary headaches on a firm scientific foundation. He has taken insights from experimental medicine to interrogate the underlying circuit and cellular mechanisms, and then used the knowledge gained to develop new treatments. Among his achievements is the identification of the role of CGRP, which led to a new class of medicines to treat migraine. He also elucidated the roles of 5HT receptor subtypes, dopaminergic signalling and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide. He established the concept of trigeminal autonomic ephalalgia and led clinical trials that demonstrated the efficacy of oxygen inhalation and neuromodulatory treatments. In 2021, Goadsby was awarded the Brain Prize with Lars Edvinsson, Michael Moskovitz and Jes Olesen. |
