TitleGoadsby, Peter: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date21 April 2022
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Peter Goadsby as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationPeter Goadsby put research into migraine and other primary headaches on a firm scientific foundation. He has taken insights from experimental medicine to interrogate the underlying circuit and cellular mechanisms, and then used the knowledge gained to develop new treatments. Among his achievements is the identification of the role of CGRP, which led to a new class of medicines to treat migraine. He also elucidated the roles of 5HT receptor subtypes, dopaminergic signalling and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide. He established the concept of trigeminal autonomic ephalalgia and led clinical trials that demonstrated the efficacy of oxygen inhalation and neuromodulatory treatments. In 2021, Goadsby was awarded the Brain Prize with Lars Edvinsson, Michael Moskovitz and Jes Olesen.
