| Citation | Michaelides’ state-of-the-art computational work has significantly advanced our understanding of chemical and physical processes at the surfaces of materials. His work on water-solid interfaces set out key conceptual foundations on how water bonds to metals and the surfaces of other crystalline materials. His work on chemical reactions at metal surfaces helped the identification of concepts and relations that are now widely applied to guide the development of new heterogeneous catalysts. In striving to connect his simulation work with experiment he has developed improved versions of density functional theory and a deeper understanding of the role of quantum nuclear effects. |
