Citation | Carola Vinuesa has defined how antibody production by B-cells is initiated by a novel T cell subset, follicular T helper cells (Tfh), characterised by the transcription factor Bcl6 and dependent on the cytokine IL-21. Her work established that increased Tfh activity causes autoimmunity and she discovered T follicular regulatory cells (Tfr) which regulate excessive antibody responses and prevent switching to allergenic IgE responses. Her recent discovery showing that Tfr produce the neuropeptide neuritin that prevents autoantibody production and IgE-mediated anaphylaxis paves the way for novel therapies in the control of antibody-mediated diseases. |
