TitleBennett, Charles: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date21 April 2022
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Charles Bennett as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Foreign Member, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationFor demonstrating thermodynamic reversibility of computation, thereby elucidating Maxwell's demon paradox and the thermodynamics of error correction; for playing a leading role in rebuilding classical communication and computation theory on quantum foundations with entanglement as quantifiable resource, including the invention of quantum cryptography, quantum teleportation, entanglement concentration and distillation, and the classical and quantum reverse Shannon theorems. His logical depth formalised the complexity of physical systems in terms of computational complexity and algorithmic information. His lectures worldwide and online showed that quantum theory is simple enough for lay people to understand and important enough to belong in a liberal education.
