Citation | George Gao is the most accomplished scientist in China in the field of infection and immunity, particularly relating to emerging viral infections. He has successfully applied a combination of molecular virology, epidemiology, structural biology and cell biology to derive a better understanding of these major threats to human health. Notably, Gao has also achieved significant leadership positions in Chinese science. As events of the last two have shown understanding emerging infections in China is crucial for the world. George Gao has played a central role before and during the pandemic, he trained in the UK and retains close affiliations with a number of scientists and scientific institutions in the UK. He is deeply committed to open science and international collaboration, a commitment that has been self evident over the last two years and which was fundamental to informing the world of the impending crisis in January 2020. |
