Citation | Graetzel pioneered research on mesoscopic energy conversion devices, being the first to conceive and apply mesoscopic systems for the generation of electricity and fuels from sunlight and electricity storage in lithium ion batteries. He is credited with moving the photovoltaic field beyond the pn junction photodiodes to the molecular level by inventing dye-sensitized solar cells These in turn engendered perovskite solar cells, whose efficiency have already risen to over 25 %. His revolutionary approach has also allowed him to boost the yield of solar hydrogen generation by photoelectrochemical cells, based on cheap and abundant light absorbers such as iron oxide. |
