CitationMaria Leptin plays a prominent role in leading European Science, most recently as director of EMBO, where she has introduced innovations in funding, selection mechanisms and scientific publishing that serve the scientific community. She is now continuing this service as President of the European Research Council. Her research has made significant contributions to several fields, from immunity to development, genetics and cell biology. As member of boards of trustees and evaluation panels in the UK, and policy collaborations with the Royal Society, Wellcome Trust and others, Leptin maintained a continuous close connection to the UK research and science policy communities.
