Correspondence about the selection of a replacement for Colonel Robin Smart as leader for the Royal Society Antarctic Expedition at Halley Bay. Joseph (Joe) MacDowell, an existing member of the expedition team, is selected. Also included are technical instructions for experiments to be carried out (HB/1.57).

The file includes:
correspondence between D C Martin, assistant secretary of the Royal Society and James Wordie, chairman of the British National Committee for the International Geophysical Year;
correspondence between D C Martin and Joseph MacDowell, 12 November 1957
copy and original of letter from J MacDowell to D C Martin on his return journey via Cape Town, 10 February 1959
further correspondence between MacDowell and Martin regarding MacDowell's post-expedition work on the Halley Bay data, 1959
