Title | Letter from H [Henry] Holland, Brook Street, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Holland; Sir Henry; first baronet (1788-1873); British physician |
Date | 22 July [1864] |
Description | He returns Book 5 [of 'The Iliad'] and the rendering of the Homeric spirit is excellent throughout, with the hexameters bringing him through the 'story of wounds and carnage - of the fights of Gods & Men'. Holland gives line by line suggestions, saying he is ashamed at their trifling nature. He hopes to indulged with the following books, as it is pleasant to go through 'The Iliad' again in such company. He will not ask for Book 6 at present, since he will be much engaged before leaving London for his vacation. He will not visit Virginia battlefields again this year, but will content himself with the Scilly and Channel Islands, before seeing the Gibraltar caves and their contents. |
