Title | Letter from H F [William Henry Fox] Talbot, 11 Great Stuart St., Edinburgh, to J F W [Sir John Frederick William] Herschel |
Creator | Talbot; William Henry Fox (1800-1877); British pioneer of photography |
Date | 2 May 1863 |
Description | Talbot returns Herschel's translation of Book 2 of 'The Iliad', together with several other literary productions. Herschel has a good authority for translating 'Hie thee away...', but he cannot think that Zeus would use the word 'pernicious'. He cites [Philip] Buttmann's 'Lexilogus' and gives his own translation of the line, with an explanation. He will send Herschel his latest essays on cuneiform and the Assyrian language. Herschel will be interested in the chronicles of the war of the Sennacherib against Hezekiah, to compare with the scripture account. 'There are at present too few workers in this mine, which promises much for the most ancient periods of history'. |
