Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, Clapham, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 14 April 1846 |
Description | Pritchard is glad that Herschel's son's health is restored, and he can return, with Friday suiting them best. He would like to show Herschel the chapel, if he comes. The choir is equal to the Hawkhurst one, with the boys singing and chanting with zeal. 'What an age the next but one will be - with better telescopes & microscopes, & standing on the shoulders of their forefathers'. He [jokingly] thinks that comets are vorticellae, with tails as cilia, feeding themselves 'on luminiferous aether', and Herschel should send his views to the 'Gardeners Chronicle'. Pritchard will be an antagonist, upholding 'the infusorial origin'. He hopes that Lady Herschel is in good health, their godchild [Julia Herschel Pritchard] is well, but Mrs Pritchard's health is indifferent. |
