Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, Clapham, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 28 July [1850] |
Description | He was glad to receive Herschel's note and he believes in the plan for Willey [William James Herschel]. The 'fight and alarm' will be salutory for him and eventually Herschel will not mind the delay. He is pleased with Herschel's other two boys. Pritchard has settled his sister and niece at Heidelburg, describes their community and says that he is impressed with the superiority of German ladies, but notes the inferiority of the men. He describes the grandest sights he experienced on his travels: Amsterdam, the Bernese Alps at sunset, the view from the top of the Col de Balme, and the monks of St. Bernard. He asks if Herschel could explain the dense blue of the Rhone at Geneva, which he thought was from the blue stones below the transparent water. At the confluence of the yellowish river Arve, the mixture was not green, but it lost its transparency. He wonders if the blue colour is connected with what Herschel calls dichromatism. |
