Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, Honorary Secretary, Royal Astronomical Society, London, to Sir John [Frederick William] Herschel |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 2 February 1865 |
Description | He sends to Herschel the first rough proofs of the slips of [Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von] Struve's obituary, which has been a labour of love. He thinks Herschel might be interested and his help has been incorporated, with some personal history in part from Otto Struve. Pritchard is no hand at geodesy so he had to read Struve himself. He also encloses what he has drawn up on the Nebulae Catalogue and asks Herschel to correct it. Herschel's Homer ['The Iliad'] has given enjoyment to his household. His version gives a better idea of the original than any other and he gives his thoughts on this. [William] Cowper's Odyssey gives a faint idea of the thing. [Alfred] Tennyson is quietly trying some of the most famous passages to set side by side with Lord Derby's. After one more evening he will send the manuscript [of 'The Iliad'] back to Mrs [Julia Margaret] Cameron. 'That excellent and eccentric lady had better photograph it by way of practice'. He sends a dialogue [HSF/1/3/43]. |
