Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, Freshwater, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 31 January 1866 |
Description | He sends the slips of the eloge for Sir W [William Rowan] Hamilton which he felt duty-bound to write. He asks Herschel if he can look at it, but even more he wants a certain sonnet which Herschel wrote near Ely Cathedral while in company with Hamilton, and permission to quote a few lines. If he thinks it judicious, he will mention the completion of 'The Iliad' and he hopes that Herschel approves of the ethos of the memorial. Pritchard has just finished [Johann Franz] Encke's obituary with the assistance of [Wilhelm Julius] Foerster and his pupil Dr [Franz Friedrich Ernst] Brunnow and he found more material than expected. Under a rough exterior, he had something which made him beloved of pupils. He has a little on [John William] Lubbock as a greater physical writer than either but he can get no detailed account of him or 'work up the steam on behalf of his memory'. He notes the [Warren] De La Rue is an extraordinary man, who has continued to write an admirable medal speech on the Moon's acceleration. Prestwich saw Gamma Andromedae divided by his 13-inch reflector, noting the instrument's construction. |
