Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, Freshwater, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 27 March 1866 |
Description | Alexander [Herschel] has written to Sir John on the subject referred to in Pritchard's Glasgow letter. When his colleagues at the Royal Astronomical Society learn that he is willing to complete the 'Catalogue of Double Stars' they will express concern that no 'avoidable mechanical labour' should be imposed upon him. They will feel the £25 or £30 for an assistant, and he has sounded out Alex on the subject, as Sir John now knows. He asks if this would indeed save Herschel some labour. He encloses a letter from Mr [William Rutter] Dawes explaining how he would help. Pritchard asks if Herschel has Scientific Memoirs part II for February 1853, and the memoir by Dr [Hermann von] Helmholtz on the conservation of force. He cannot find anything in it that is either wrong or not new. He discusses this, concluding that 'I should have no doubt myself on the fallacy of this whole doctrine of conservation of force ...if I did not see it so pertinaciously in print with the names of persons having a reputation to lose...'. |
