Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, Freshwater, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 24 December 1866 |
Description | Pritchard is vexed at the delay to Alex's [Alexander Stewart Herschel] honorarium, as £50 was unanimously assigned to him for work which was concluded to be cheap at the price. Mr [Edward James] Stone made that very observation. He hopes that all is right now, but he telegraphed the Treasurer to send the due to Collingwood on Christmas Day. 'The fault lies with that pasty-headed Secretary of ours', [Richard] Hodgson, who also gave Pritchard some trouble about the first surface Sun-glass. Opinion was expressed at Council that [William] Huggins should be Secretary and Hodgson Vice-President, but Hodgson said he would go if offered the Presidency. The cheque should have been sent a week ago. He notes meteor observations in which there may be errors. They give medals to Huggins and [William Allen] Miller for spectrum observations and Pritchard thinks this a harder subject than it looks. There may be a hitch in awarding two medals. |
