Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, 6 Keble Terrace, Oxford, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 24 April 1871 |
Description | The manuscript of tables for an object glass on Herschel's construction is safe. He borrowed it to see if it could be incorporated into his own tables, now complete. He was not sure if they were burnt by an officious person during his move, but at least Herschel's are safe. A man took away a box of papers which Pritchard found half-consumed, to his horror. Herschel once sent him a set of quotations on force, from his own works. Pritchard may not be able to recover the original; his books and boxes are not yet all unpacked. He has sent to [George Biddell] Airy from whom he heard the tale of Sir William Herschel and 'military obligations'. He gives the story's genealogy. Miller of Cambridge gave him German names who had avoided the conscription and William Herschel's name is to be erased from those who escaped from 'an abominable tyranny'. Airy has not acknowledged the receipt of his note. Pritchard did not understand that the communication was confidential and it ought not to have been, but he has not mentioned the false rumour to anyone but Miller and Herschel's daughter.
With a note by Herschel: 'Rec'd April 25/71...'. |
