Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, Bowness, Westmoreland, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 12 July 1845 |
Description | He is grieved to hear an indifferent account of Herschel's boy, who left Clapham better than he had been. He was often out of class during the cold Spring months but had recovered. He is a 'careless little fellow' exposing himself to cold and wet. Pritchard notes that he has left rooms to play outdoors in the damp, in his slippers. Warm weather will restore him soon. Herschel should consult his child's health before returning him to Clapham, as a few months' quiet thought at home will do him no harm. If Herschel had an old theodolite, the child might measure height and distances, and make calculations with elementary trigonometry. On his return to Clapham, Pritchard will take him into his own house 'to prevent his childish indiscretions'. He hopes that Herschel will write from time to time about the boy. |
