Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, Clapham, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 24 November 1845 |
Description | He thanks Herschel for his enquiries about Mrs Pritchard and the little girl, both of whom are progressing well. He delayed replying to Herschel while waiting for an answer from 'a competent gentleman' but he had declined a plan, the cause being health. 'There is but little hope of a man's knowing much else that conventionalities who at the age of 25 would grind Latin verses into an Eton lad'. He thanks Herschel and Lady Herschel for spending a bright day, although Lady Herschel may not recollect the midnight disturbance well. In a few days he will send to Willie [William James Herschel] information on Greek peculiarities, but tonight Pritchard must attend a discussion at the Clapham Athenaeum. In a postscript, Pritchard refers to the dispute between [John Peter] Gassiot and [James] South, in 'The Times' for 1 December. |
