DescriptionLetters from John Herschel to his mother and father, with occasional letters to his sisters. There are also items addressed to his brother Alexander Stewart Herschel [letter 72], to James Thomas Walker [letters 75 and 102] and to James Francis Tennant [letter 105]. Commencing with letters from Herschel's training with the Royal Engineers, at Brompton Barrracks, Chatham, before his regimental service in India, and work with the Great Trigonometrical Survey in British controlled India [now India and Pakistan]. Later correspondence features Herschel's observations of the solar eclipse of 1858 and his spectroscopic work, leading up to his candidacy as a Fellow of the Royal Society.
