Description	He has received his father's letter and thinks he has anticipated some of the queries [relating to his Royal Society candidature]. He may count on [Andrew Scott] Waugh, [William] Huggins, [James Thomas] Walker, [Alexander] Strange, [James Francis] Tennant, [Henry Edward Landor] Thuillier and perhaps [George Biddell] Airy, [James] Pritchard, and J E [John Edward] Gray. He is at a loss for personal recommendations, but he would suggest Waugh and Huggins, and if others are asked, it should be discretionary. Huggins has volunteered and Waugh would take as a compliment being asked by John's father. He does not know if [George Gabriel] Stokes, [J Norman] Lockyer, [William Allen] Miller or others would say anything in his favour, but he would not decline the compliment. On his father's advice that he should not let modesty prevent him from providing data, he does not think he has judgement in estimating his own work. He has received a snub from his chief after mentioning the brevity of his testimonial in a letter; Walker responded that instead of saying too little, he had probably implied too much, and others were equally worthy of the honour. Walker will be going home in December and his father should have the opportunity to learn the state of his views. They have been following the [Franco-Prussian] War by telegram, but the newspapers they receive are still talking about it as only probable.
