TitleLetter from 'Jacky' [John Herschel], Murree, to 'Dearest Mother' [Margaret Brodie Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer
Date8 August 1860
DescriptionHe apologises for not writing for so long and has to scribble a few lines before packing and setting off for one month in Kashmir, taking ten or eleven days to get there. There has been intense rain and he gives an account of the weather extremes at Murree. Major [James Thomas] Walker was expressing an interest in John's father's paper 'Projection of the Sphere' and wants a copy from the Royal Geographical Society. He asks for one to be sent if his father has one. He notes the rain gauge reading at the office and has heard that the Kashmir road and valley receive little rain. They are anxiously waiting for the terms of amalgamation. Sir Charles Wood is spoken of as a man not to be trusted. John promises to send a long account of his journey. In a postscript, he notes the receipt of letters from Bella and Julie [Herschel].
