Title | Letter from J H [John Herschel], Mussoorie, to 'Dearest Mother' [Margaret Brodie Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 2 November 1862 |
Description | He has little to write about and is in the grip of a lazy fit, such as he used to have at Chatham. His first quarter century of existence has just closed and he takes stock, in terms of happiness, wisdom and whether he is 'better'. He discusses his Christian beliefs and death. He is sitting on his verandah, but foolishly longs to be in the field again. He gives an account of the weather. His friends are about to depart and his work is now entirely mental; he misses the more mechanical elements. Willy [William James Herschel] writes that he will go home in May and come to see John in November, neither of which John believes. His mother's letter of 25 July speaks of the arrival of his photographs, and John comments on his dog companion and pony from Kashmir. John's height is 5 feet 7 3/4 inches, as ever. |
