TitleLetter from J [John] Herschel, Masoorie [Mussoorie], to 'Dear Father' [Sir John Frederick William Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer
Date29 October 1865
DescriptionJohn is 'on the tramp' and leaving Mussorie, which he leaves with regret as his home for many years. He completes his twenty-eighth year that day and sends some serious reflections, which are a little egotistical. He notes his own situation and talents, and the need for guidance in their best use. He discusses individual needs and improvements, and serving a greater cause. John seeks 'guidance in the choice of a path of intellectual activity'. He wonders if his father will think this conceited, and asks for no answer. John wishes to express his main purpose in a yearning towards home, but asks for an answer if his father has any to give.
