TitleLetter from J [John] Herschel, Bedford Hotel, to 'Dear Father' [Sir John Frederick William Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer
Date1 July 1866
DescriptionHe received his father's letter, with the introduction to Sir H [Henry] James and the pamphlet, which he will read again on the way down. He did not acknowledge it immediately, because he was on his way to Woolwich. He will be glad when visits to Southampton and Hastings are done and he can get home again. He cannot give a good account of yesterday's review. He notes that the English 'rough' and the Woolwich one is offensive. He is inclined to moralise on the 'populus' of England, and the manners and customs. In travelling he is taking in an immense amount of information, but in a loose way. He will be in Southampton tomorrow, but back to Collingwood by the end of the week. He complains of the heat, saying that at Leeds, the museum curator spoke of 86 degrees in the shade. He saw a thermometer the next day at 85 degrees, but he has not seen higher than 76 degrees in fair circumstances. He thinks he will write on arrival at Southampton.
