| Description | He sends some details of his nebula observations. He has confirmed his observation of the fourth line in the Orion Nebula and of its continuous spectrum. This quite upsets the conclusion of Mr. [William] Huggins, 'that partially resolvable nebulae exist which are purely gaseous'. His father's nebula no.826 is gaseous, he concludes. No. 670 could not be found [with a note 'reexamined. It does not exist JFWH']. No. 685 two objects should have been in the field but he could only see one, which he concludes was the cluster. The night during which he observed was very cear and in just a few minutes he could see seven nebulae and eight cluster in the same field of view. He had no difficulties other than in not being able to find No.769, but gives positional information on others, referring to a sketch, but saying he will sketch them again, more carefully. |
