Dr Wren shewed the Company his Modell of the Theatre to be built at Oxford, for the University Acts, and upon Occasion, for Playes. He had the thanks of the Society, and was desired to give them in writing a Scheme and Description of the whole frame of it, to remain as a memorial with them, among their Archives.
Mr Long gave some Account of the Generation of Ants, how they come out of the Pods full of Eggs, which receive immediatlythe male, and then become Ants : where it was observed, that they were Maggots, that come out of those pods, seing they appear in a Microscope to move and gape.
The same assured to have sen the maggot under a Stagg's tongue.
He made also the Experiment of killing water- Neuts with Bay - salt, wormwwod - salt, and sal Prunella ; the first killing them slower then the two other : being put into fresh water they recovered not.
He mentioned, that the land -Neutes are more noxious than the water - Neutes ; and, that Toades, though they were not venomous in the cool and moist season of the Spring ; yet they wer so in the heat of Summer, especially in Italy and such like hot Cuntrys. He added, that a Toad in the height of Summer, broaken, infects and poysons with her very Steam.
The same Experimetn was ordered to be made upon Toades, both male and female, the Operator to provide some of them against next day.
Dr Croon affirmed to have seen a true Viper, with a young live one in her belly.
Mr Long mentioned that the femal Viper hath 4 teeth, 2 above and 2 below ; but a male, only 2, and those above.
Dr Goddard's glasse with srale Vinegar was produced, which had been kept close stopped with a Cork for 5 or 6 dayes, whereby most of the little Leeches swimming therein were killed, appearing now stretched out in Length, and so floating and moved up and downe, but not moving themselves, or wrigling as they do when alive.
Mr Boyle was desired to communicate his papers, concern-ing the maner how my Lord of Cork, his Father, had Carpes transported into Ireland where they were not before.
Sir Robert Moray mentioning a way used in Scotland, to produce Fish where they are not by transporting of spawn ; was desired to make a full Enquiry after it, and to comunicate it to the Society,; which he promised to doe.
Mr Hook produced two Microscopical Observations, One, a Mine of Diamonds usual in Flints ; the other, a Spider appear-ing to have 6 [crossed out; leggs] Eyes : but this later was not yet perfectly drawn.
The Virgula Divina, was ordered to be tried next day, Mr Boyle and Mr Brereton affirming to have seen it succeed in the hands of others ; though theirs were not so luckie, as to have that Effect performed by them. The Operator was commanded to desire the Apparatus from Mr Brereton to be tryed both by the naked hand, and after the way practised by Gabriel Plat, and printed in his Treatise, called A Discovery of Subterraneal Treasure page 12.
Mr Boyle was again desired to speak with the Artist, about the way of softening wood, and hardening it again.
Sir Robert Moray related, how an old watch, when to be mended, was found to have he Steel so hard, that is could not be filed, neither before it was heated, not after it was cooled again, but onely, whilst it was red hot.
Mr Long mentioned to have seen a Brest-piece so tough, that it could not be peirced by a Pistol-bullet, but was onely indented.
Collonel Tuke was desired to take an occasion to Speake with his Highnesse Prince Rupert, concerning the way of tempering steel to that toughnesse, that it may not easily be peirced : and to see if he will please to discourse it in Favour of the Society.
Dr Croon's three Experiments were read, Of the Eggs in Wine ; the Ventricle transuding wine ; the Carpe fed in the Air. They were ordered to be entered. He was thanked, and desired to try the Experiment of transudation upon the Ventricle of a Live dogge ; and to repeat that of the Carp, with as much care as may be ; and that of the Egge, with small peices of an Egg-shell, put into a glasse with wine, luted up.
Mr Boyle mentioned to have tried the Eperiment of the Egge, in Sack, and to have found it alsi inscrustatede with a Tartarous matter.
It was queried, whether the was done by Praecipitation or corrosion.
Dr Croon was desired, to give an Account in writing of the Bladder of the Tench, killed in the Engin ; which bladder he said to have found flat, but expanding it selfe again (when put into the Engine) upon the Exhausting of the Air.
Dr Wren was desired to acquaint Mr Hook with the Apparatus and Progress, he had made in the Experiment of hatching Eggs, by the equal and moderate heat of a lamp ; in order to prosecute the Experiment, which was said to have been so farre advanced, as that thereby bloud was produced in Egges.
In the Survey of the Zodiack, my Lord Brouncker and Sir Robert Moray assigned to themselves Sagittarie : Mr Ball, Libra : Dr Pope and Dr Croon Aries : Dr Wren and Mr Hook, Taurus.
Mr Boyle was desired to try, whether highly rectified Spirit of Wine and Camphir dissolved therein, will flame away together. '
