| Description | ' A Latine Letter, written by one Dr Leichner, Professor at Erford, to the Society, relating to a printed book of his, sent by him to his Majesty concerning his designe of reducing all Sciences, and Divinity it selfe, into Order, by an Apodictical way, and desiring the Opinion of the Society in this Manner, was red ; and committed to the consideration of Dr Wilkins, Dr Wallis, Mr Pell and Mr Hook, to make a Report thereof to the Council ; and to draw up something by way of Answer to it.
Dr Goddard brought in writing an Account of the two Experiment made the last day, with Gun-powder and Aurum fulminans in Iron balls : it was read, and ordered to be entered. He was desired to prepare more Aurum fulminans, to prosecute these Experiments.
Mr Colwall gaue in an Account , which he had received from S Helena, in a letter of April 30th 1663 concerning the Tides, Winds, Springs, Spouts and Weather there. He had the thanks of the Society for his care, and the Relation was ordered to be entered. [in margin; Lib.2 Fol 195 195 [297]]
The same mentioned, that a certain Ship-master Mr Thorowgood, who had formerly received instructions from the Society, for the East-indies, was come home and had some Account to giue, of what in his voyage he had done for them ; He was desired to bring it in, the next day.
Dr Goddard produced some of the Barnet water of two years old, in a big glasse-vessell, which being cracked in one place, some Salt was found on the outside of the Glasse, about the Crack : which Salt put upon a Coal, did melt, and was looked upon as of a peculiar kind.
Mr Hook was ordered to make Observations both upon the Insects of the Rain-water, and the Barnet water : to draw Schemes of them ; to see whether they will change into other kinds, and to what bignesse they will grow.
The same produced his Explications of the new Sounding instrument ; and of the Vessel that fetcheth water from the bottom of the Sea : Item, of the Engine, that is to determine the forces of Gunpowder by weight. He was desired to draw the Figures in great against next day, for the better Satisfaction of the Company.
The same produced a Scheme of the Pliades, as he had lately observed them, mingled with other Starrs, among which he had discovered, ten kinds of Magnitude below the fifth. He represented in this Scheme, above eighty Starrs, whereas Gassendus hath set down but thirty five, neer the said Pleiades. He was desired to continue these Observations ; and particularly to make some, of the sheath of Orion, the Triangular Starrs etc.
It being related by the Secretary, that he has been desired in a letter, written by one Monsr Ludolph a Counsellour of the Duke of Gotha, to procure from the Society, for a Domestick of the said Prince, that is to be sent into Egypt and Ethiopia, some instructions of Enquiries, fit to be made in those parts ; and that it would be a great Satisfaction to the said Prince, to be gratifyed herein. The Company desired Mr Boyle, Mr Henshaw and others that had Opportunity to draw up some Queries for that purpose : And Mr Henshaw having been already desired to think upon this matter ; gaue in a Paper of his containing several Inquiries for Egypt ; which was read, and Ordered to be enterd.
