'Two certificates of recommendation were read, and ordered to be put up in the publick meeting Room, viz., The first in favour of the Marquis de Turbeville, correspondent of the Royal Academy of Sciences, and principal Manager of the scheme for cultivating the waste lands of France; dated Paris September 28, 1761, and signed De Fouchy, De Jussieu, and La Caille, three foreign members; and Thomas Birch, M Maty, And James Parsons, three English members.
The other certificate was infavour of Mr Abeille, also correspondent of the Royal Academy of Sciences, and Secretary of the Academy of Agriculture, established at Rennes in Britanny; dated Pris the 19 August 1761, and signed Dortous de Mairan, Hellot, De Jussieu, and Dr Alembert, fouor foreign members; and Thomas Birch, M Maty and James Parsons, three English members fo the Society. '
Gift received; A manuscript treatise in German consisting of 79 pages in quarto together with a letter in French, addressed to the Society, dated from the camp near Meissen, August 12, 1761, and signed W Bilquer, MD Surgeon in ordinary and Surgeon general of the Armies of his Prussian Majesty, was comunicated form Andrew Mitchel Esq his Majesty's Minister at the said Court. ' The letter announced to the Society the present of the Manuscript aforesaid; which is a Treatise concerning wounds of the head, composed by Mr Bilquer, principally from his own observations after the late battle at Torgau. The Author addes, that if he is so happy as to merit the approbation of the Society, and may have their permission, he purposes to continue the communication of all his Discovereies. Thanks were ordered to Mr Bilquer, and to Mr Mitchel, for the said present. '
Letters received; 1. Letter from Richard Dunthorn and adressed to Edward Delavall Esq FRS dated 18 January 1762 at Cambridge concerning certain observations of the late Transit of Venus concluding the planet Venus has an atmosphere and giving his reasons. 2. Letter from Neville Maskelyne to Lord Charles Cavendish Vice President of the Royal Society of 30 July 1761 at St Helena of 16 pages in quarto giving a narrative of experimental approaches determining the figure of the earth and the proporional effects of gravity in different latitudes, particularly his own experience at St Helena compared with the correspondent effects of gravity at Greenwich. Recounts previous approaches, from the ancients to the present day. Lord Charles Cavendish and Mr Maskelyne thanked for their communcation. |
