Description | Blowing engine for Carron (blast) furnace No. 1 (tub blowers and tuyeres) Elevation and plan, scale 1:24; details, scale 1:12. Ink wash. Inscribed in John Farey's hand; See Mr Smeaton's letter to Dr Roebuck, 13 June 1764, sent with this design and some explanation; see General Letter Book, V page 134. This design was adapted to the old water wheel 27 foot diameter. A machine was executed in a different manner, see Letter Book 8, 111-125, for a new furnace, No. 3 with only two cylinders. No. 1 was afterwards altered to this plan in 1768 (Letters Received 9.25, and 10.177) but with a cast iron spur wheel instead of wood. In 1769 the axis of the water wheel broke and Mr Smeaton recommended an axis of cast iron, see his sketch folio 70v; also to make a new water wheel 20 feet diameter and lay aside the cog wheels, but the machine was repaired as before and set to work again before mid-summer, 1769 (see Letters Received 10.177) Note; In 1771 the above mentioned machine No. 3 with two cylinders was rebuilt on this plan with the old water wheel 27 foot diameter, 4 feet 9 inches broad and set to work at the latter part of 1770. Four cylinders 53.5 inches diameter, 4.5 feet stroke. |
