TitleCarron Iron Works, Stirlingshire. Design for laying water upon the wheel for Carron furnalce Number 1
Date1769
DescriptionDesign for laying the water upon the wheel for Carron (blast) furnace No. 1
Plan and elevation, scale 1:12. Ink wash
Inscribed in the hand of John Farey 'Note the actual dimensions of the water wheel for the blowing machine at Furnace No. 1 appears to have been stated in letter, 16 March, 1769 (Letters Received, 10.148) as 27 feet diameter out and out, 4 feet 7 inches breadth of sole, 13 inches shroud, inside measure. 80 buckets in the wheel which takes the water at the 15th bucket from the top.
This is mentioned in report 11 February 1769 (Printed Reports, I, 361) as applicable with advantage to the water wheel on No. 4 furnace and again in letter of 29th March 1769 (Letters Received , 9.240) as though it had not been applied at No. 1 which had broken its wooden axis and required repair and Mr Smeaton in that letter recommended a smaller water wheel, 19 feet or 20 feet diameter to go overshot as preferable to this plan and without cog wheel.'
