DescriptionJulia Higgins is a polymer scientist. Her early research career focused on fundamental polymer science (a new area of research at that time) where she applied the technique of neutron scattering to the structure, organisation and movement of polymers. Her later work explores the behaviour of mixtures of polymers, observing the boundaries at which they meet and how they separate.

Higgins went on to extend her reach to include education, management, policy making and advisory roles, and is particularly active in efforts to raise the profile of women in research. She received a DBE in 2001 for services to science. Since 1976 she has been based at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. She became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1995, and served as Foreign Secretary of the Society from 2001-2006.
