AdminHistorySir John Robert Vane was born in Tardebigg, Worcester 29 March 1927. He was educated at King Edward VI High School, the University of Birmingham and in 1946 went to Oxford to be trained in pharmacology under Harold Burn FRS. He would also spend time working at Sheffield University before returning to Oxford to complete a DPhil at the Nuffield Institute for Medical Research.
In 1953 Vane took up an Assistant Professorship at Yale University, returning to UK two years later as a Senior Lecturer in pharmacology at the Royal College of Surgeons. He went on to become Professor of Experimental Pharmacology in 1966. During his time at the Royal College of Surgeons he developed the blood-bathed superfusion bioassay technique sometimes known as the Vane cascade bioassay technique. In 1973 Vane became an R&D director for the Wellcome Foundation based at their laboratories in Beckenham, Kent. Vane moved away from the Wellcome Laboratories in 1986 to found the William Harvey Research Institute based at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, retiring as director in the late 1990s but taking up the position of Honorary President of the Institute until its merger with Queen Mary College when he moved over to the William Harvey Research Foundation, but retaining the title of Honorary President. During the 1990s. He established Vanguard Medica Ltd with his colleague Erik Anggard, which floated on the stock exchange 1996. Vane also acted as a consultant for various pharaceutical companies over the course of his career.
