TitleCorrespondence between Professor Joshua Harold Burn, FRS, Sir John Vane (1960s)
Date12 June 1960 - 27 June 1969
DescriptionThe correspondence in this file - much of which is quite detailed - relates largely to work conducted by both men, including: research into the action of the hypogastric nerve, and the effects of substances such as cocaine, chlorine and noradrenaline on the nerve; the potentiating action of substances on the nerve; the technique of blood-bathing organs; and other research relating to noradrenaline. The file also includes an exchange of opinions and comments relating to a series of statements made by Professor Burn regarding noradrenaline in 1965; and correspondence relating to the appointment and work of Kevin Ng at the Wellcome Trust, 1965 - 1969. Whilst much of the correspondence in the file concerns scientific research, there is also a highly complementary letter from Professor Burn to Sir John Vane (February 1967) in which he states that Sir John Vane's methods of 'studying the appearance and disappearance of active substances in the blood' will soon pave his way into the Royal Society ('very difficult nowadays'); and a further letter congratulating Sir John Vane on his being elected to give the second Gaddum Lecture (Februrary 1968).
