Description	Although the correspondence in this file contains many references to scientific research and work, the letters are of a more cordial nature than those contained in earlier files, and they illustrate the development of Sir John Vane and Professor Burn's relationship. Whereas earlier correspondence suggests that Sir John Vane saw Professor Burn as a mentor, this later correspondence shows Sir John Vane's rise in stature, and almost a role reversal, with Professor Burn seeking Sir John Vane's opinion regarding pharmacological research. However, the letters clearly show the depth of mutual respect and admiration which each scientist held for the other, with Professor Burn asking Sir John Vane to help put together his obituary for the Royal Society, in December 1976. The file contains correspondence relating to Professor Burn's recommendation that Sir John Vane should receive an award from the Gairdner Foundation in 1970 and 1972, and also correspondence relating to Sir John Vane's candidacy for election to the Royal Society in October 1972, with Professor Burn warning Sir John Vane 'this is your first year - no one gets in his first year'; Sir John Vane was eventually elected in 1974. There is also correspondence relating to Professor Burn being awarded the first Wellcome Gold Medal in 1978, and his reaction to the news. There is recurrent correspondence relating to Professor Burn's attempts to have people elected to the Royal Society, from 1976 - 1979, and information relating to the Society's election process and committee structure. The file also contains correspondence relating to the potential effects of cod liver oil and its ability to replenish prostacyclin in the body, the effect of prostcyclin in peripheral vascular disease, and the effect of diabetes on the body's ability to generate prostacyclin. In addition, there is correspondence relating to Professor Burn's suggestion that Wellcome could patent his 'Compound C' as an anaesthetic, in August 1976.
