TitleCorrespondence between Dr Henry (Harry) Collier, Sir John Vane and others
Date20 April 1961 - 14 July 1983
DescriptionThis file contains detailed correspondence about the research both scientists undertook concerning aspirin. As is clear from the letters, the scientists had a strong friendship, although this did not prevent some discordance as to recognising and attributing credit for work, advances and discoveries in the field, particularly in published articles. Of particular interest are the following items: correspondence concerning the work of Sir John Vane, Dr Priscilla Piper and Dr Collier into understanding how aspirin works, and investigating "substance X", 1969 - 1971; correspondence concerning the publication by Dr Collier of articles for 'Nature', namely 'New light on how aspirin works' (1969), and 'A pharmacological analysis of aspirin' (1971); a copy of a letter from Dr Collier to 'New Scientist', written in response to Professor Teare's and Dr Knight's article on Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy, published in 'Science Journal', with his theories on the subject (January 1971); a copy of a letter from Dr Collier to 'New Scientist' concerning Graham Chedd's article, 'Aspirin: an answer at last?' (June 1971); correspondence detailing Sir John Vane's thoughts on Dr Collier's hypothesis of morphine action, January 1974;and correspondence concerning the Ph D thesis of a student, Peter Berry, on arachidonic acid, July 1974. A copy of Dr Collier's CV (March 1969) is also included in the file.
