DescriptionIn 1967, Sir John Vane accepted the offer of a consultantship for the Department of Pharmacology at the Squibb Institute for Medical Research, New Jersey [U.S.A.], where Dr Zola Horovitz was Head of Department. As part of his consultantship, Sir John Vane made regular visits to the Squibb Institute, where he observed and contributed to the Department's research and experiments, and subsequently reported his observations to Dr Horovitz on his return to the U.K. Sir John Vane resigned his consultancy in 1973, when he became Research and Development Director for the Wellcome Foundation Limited. Accordingly, the majority of the correspondence in this file dates from 1967 - 1973, and relates to Sir John Vane's consultancy and visits, as well as the research being undertaken by both scientists and their respective departments. It is evident from the correspondence that Sir John Vane and Dr Horovitz had a good working relationship but, although the correspondence is generally cordial and friendly in nature, it is largely professional in nature, rather than personal.
The file includes the following items: a Curriculum Vitae for Dr Horovitz (c1967); a letter from Sir John Vane relating to David Mills' experiements with cinanserin (13 March 1969); correspondence the results of Sir John Vane's experiments with 'the synthetic pentapeptide SQ.20475' (November 1969); and a copy of a letter from Sir John Vane regarding the inflammatory process and the effect of anti-inflammatory drugs on various types of shock and respiratory problems (16 June 1970).
