Description | Hourly meteorological observations, made at Harwich, Essex, by the officers of HMS Sheawater [at Winter solstice]. Columns for time, uncorrected barometer, attached and external thermometers, rainfall in inches, clouds, wind direction and force, weather, observer's name, and general remarks.
The named officers were: John Washingon [Commander], E.C. Davison, and F.A. Cudlip. Notes within the 'Remarks' column give information on the intruments employed: 'The Barometer is one of Newman's & when compared with the Standard of the Royal Society (Flint Glass) early in January 1842 was found to stand .037 of an inch lower...' Also, 'The External Thermometer used is a standard instrument by Newman'.
Headed [p.1]: 'Harwich. Meteorological Observations for 43 successive hours beginning at 6a.m. on Tuesday the 21st of December 1841 and ending at 12p.m. of the following day. By the Officers of H.M. Ship Shearwater...'. Signed by John Washington. Endorsed [p.2]: 'Meteorological Observations Harwich Dec. 1841'. |
