| Description | Presenting his compliments to Banks, and noting that the thermometer used at York Fort was a spirit instrument made by Cary. Experience has convinced him that mercury thermometers will not work in low temperatures, the metal becoming malleable. He leaves the meteorological journal [MS/135/5] for Banks to dispose of at his pleasure. He apologises for not replying to Banks's polite note, but he was in the country when it was read and did not return until last night. He intends to wait upon Sir Joseph next Sunday evening accompanied by his friend Mr. Moore of the Adelphi. He will show a sample of the grain raised in Hudson's Bay. |
