DescriptionTidal observations made at Liverpool, Lancashire [now Merseyside], with abstracts of results.

Commencing with monthly abstract results, April-October 1834 [pp.3-15] giving morning and afternoon times of heights of high and low water, range, wind direction, turn of stream, and uniformity of the half level every third hour before and after high water times. On printed sheets headed 'Register of Tides observed at Liverpool in the Month of [date] 1834 By Captn. Henry Mangles Denham R.N. F.R.S. Consulting Marine Engineer'.

The main journal [pp.33-231] records half-hourly readings each day, 1 May-15 October 1834, with columns for mean time, depth in feet and inches direction (magnetic), velocity, wind direction (magnetic), weather remarks, notation of high and low water by 5 minute grades from half an hour before and after, with general remarks, including barometer readings at 6.00am and 6.00pm, and thermometer readings at 6.30am and 6.30pm. On sheets headed 'Tide Journal at Liverpool. By Captn. Henry Mangles Denham R.N. F.R.S. Consulting Marine Engineer', with a section to enter the Moon's age at noon.

Section headings are [p.1]: 'Abstract of Results deduced from Data in accompanying Tide Journal' and [p.31]: 'Tide Journal in Detail from whence the foregoing Abstracts were Deduced'. The section pp.16-30 is blank and there are several blank pages within the main journal.

The front board has a long gilded dedication: 'To Sir John William Lubbock Bart. Vice President of the Royal Society &c. &c. &c. Tidal observations at Liverpool. In 1834 exhibiting the instant of high and low water periods. The whole vertical range throughout springs and neaps. And the detecting the half tide level at the 3rd hour before and after each. High water. By Captn. Henry Mangles Denham R.N. F.R.S. Consulting Marine Surveyor.'.
