DescriptionDaily meteorological observations. From 1 October 1837 to 30 September 1838, readings were taken at 9.00am, 2.00pm and 9.00pm, recording: date and time, barometer and thermometer readings, with general weather remarks. These are supplemented by [pp.26-27] annual tables of monthly means, with tables of barometer heights and thermometer readings by season, and comments. From 1 October 1838 to 30 April 1839, readings were taken at 8.00am, 2.00pm and 8.00pm, with additional columns for attached thermometer readings in celsius and an external Fahrenheit thermometer, with wind direction. There are also [pp.42-47] 'temperature in the mine' daily underground thermometrical observations from 1 November 1838 to 30 April 1839. Columns record: rock, still water, air, spring, external air, and time of observation, with general remarks, most of which have been scored through.

Headed [p.1]: 'Meteorological observations made between October 1837 and [September 1838 - deleted] April 1839 at Alten in Finmarken by Mr S.H. Thomas, chief mining agent at the Alten copper works. Presented to the Royal Society by John R. Crowe Esq. H.B.Mys. Consul in Finmarken, and communicated by Major Edward Sabine R.A., F.R.S.'. With a note below: 'Received 9 January 1840 S.H.C.' [Samuel Hunter Christie]. A second note reads: 'accompanied by Remarks on the Aurora Borealis for 1838-1839, and sixteen drawings -' [not present]. Headed [p.3]: 'Meteorological Observations made at Kaafjord in Latitude 69 degrees 58' 3" N. Longitude 23 degrees 43' 10" E. of Paris by S.H. Thomas'.
Marked in pencil [p.1]: 'Proc. IV p.195'. These tables are notes as having been read at the Royal Society on 9 January 1840 as: 'Meteorological observations made between October, 1837, and April, 1839, at Alten in Finmarken', by S.H. Thomas, Abstracts of papers printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, v.4 (1843), p.195. They are discussed in the slightly longer paper read on 21 May 1840: 'Remarks on the meteorological observations made at Alten, Finmarken, by Mr. S. H. Thomas in the years 1837, 1838, and 1839', by Edward Sabine and W H Sykes, Abstracts of the papers printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, v.4 (1843), pp.229-231.
