| Description | Observations made at Cape Adare during the overwintering of the British Antarctic Expedition of Captain Carsten Borchgrevink (also known as the Southern Cross Expedition. Generally made by Louis Bernacchi, expedition physicist, but on one occasion by William Colbeck, seaman.
The data is handwritten on printed sheets from the Kew Observatory marked 'K.O. Mag. Form F.' The first sheet contains observations taken at Kew Observatory, presumably for calibration purposes. Each printed sheet has space to record:
Date. Station where observations have been made, including latitude and longitude. Chronometer used. Error at station. Time of sun transit. Bearings of sun and fixed mark. Sums. Means. Error of chronometer. Corrected time. Equation of time. True time. Difference from S. Hour angle of sun. Series of trigonometric calcualtions to arrive at the azimuth mark.
Nine sheets have observations recorded on them, many of the printed sheets that make up the volume have not been filled in. Some sheets contain additional calculations on the reverse or annotations noted as copied from the 'Nautical Almanac'. |
