DescriptionHourly meteorological observations made from 6.00am on 21 December to 6.00am on 22 December 1837 [Winter solstice]. Columns for date and hour, Troughton barometer and atached thermometer, Newman barometer and attached thermometer, external thermometer, dew point, dryness, and 'Thermometer on the grass', with general remarks, including on wind. In addition to the main table, there is a graph showing a barometric curve over the observed period.

Below the main table are some notes, including: 'Place of observation persumed about 500 feet above the level of the Sea. The Troughton's Barr. has been lately compared with Mr. Simm's Syphon Barr. and the Newman with the Barr. of the Royal Society...They were then compared together and found to agree very well...'

Headed [p.1]: 'Meteorological observations for the December Solstice 1837 made at Ashurst'. Inscribed [p.2]: 'Meteor. Obs. made at Ashurst December Solstice 1837'. The county is not given: there are several towns and villages named Ashurst in southern England.
