CreatorJohnson; Edward John (1795-1853); British naval officer
Date6-11 May 1847
DescriptionFour sets of magnetic observations, taken on 6-7 May, and 10-11 May 1847, observed aboard HMS Bloodhound at Greenhithe, on the Thames Estuary, England. The columns commence with spaces for date, thermometer readings [completed for 6-7 May only] and barometer readings [not completed]; followed by the state of the ship ['Ship upon an even keel. Fires extinguished']; then the direction of the ship by standard compass, simultaneous bearings from ship and shore, and deviation of the standard compass.

A note at the foot of the main table [p.1] states that: ' The greatest number of the above observations were checked by the bearing of a distant object (Severndroog Tower) and where the Paddle boxes or masts intercepted the view of the shore compass, the results inserted in the Tables marked with an asterisk were deduced therefrom'.
