DescriptionMagnetic observations measuring the deviation of a standard compass under different sailing conditions aboard HMS Bloodhound sailing from Greenhithe, on the Thames Estuary, England. Deviations of the compass, firstly with fires extinguished, and then fires lighted and steam up, with the difference; followed by fires extinguished, and the deviation and difference recorded with the ship heeld eight degrees to port; deviation upon an even keel; and deviation and difference with the ship heeled eight degrees to starboard.

With a note [p.1]: 'This vessel had iron beams and the elevation of the Standard Compass on the Quarter Deck was 5 3/4 feet'.
