Title | Letter from Henry [Charles] Burdett, The Lodge, Porchester Square, to John Evans, Treasurer of the Royal Society |
Creator | Burdett; Sir; Henry Charles (1847-1920); British financier; philanthropist |
Date | 15 February 1886 |
Description | Burdett sends a cheque of £10 on behalf of the Scientific Relief Fund of the Royal Society. Refers to an application of the Statistical Society to add Royal to its title, therefore allowing Fellows of the Statistical Society to write FRSS after their name rather than FSS. Burdett refers to himself as a member of the Statistical Society, and remarks on the high title of FRS, as something that cannot be 'bought' but requires 'genuine brain work of a high order'. Describes the Statistical Society's desire for royal patronage, and how a letter from the President of the Royal Society in support of this would make a difference. |
