Title | Letter from George Gore, Institute of Scientific Research, Birmingham, to Lord Rayleigh [John William Strutt], Secretary of the Royal Society |
Creator | Gore; George (1826-1908); British physicist |
Date | 28 August 1886 |
Description | Gore wishes to communicate facts rather than make a complaint. Refers to Dr Stenhouse wiritng to Gore ten years ago, that Mr [Walter] White had informed Stenhouse that a 'gentleman' had given the Society £6000 'to be expended in promoting original research' and to test Gore's 'views with regard to its practical value'. Gore was told by White that Mr Jordell 'expressly gave the money with a view to test the accuracy of' Gore's theory. Gore remarks his views were published in articles in the 'Westminster' and 'Fortnightly', but he was given no 'intimation' that he was instrumental in Mr Jordrell giving a large amount of money. Gore refers to writing to the Society requesting a grant for a series of experiments, however no assistance was offered. Remarks on the discouragment, and his 'usefulness to science being curtailed'.
