TitleLetter from [William Turner] Thiselton-Dyer, Royal Gardens, Kew, to Michael Foster, The Royal Society
CreatorThiselton-Dyer; Sir; William Turner (1843-1928); British botanist; third director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew
Date9 May 1887
DescriptionInforms Foster 'an enumeration of the names of all known species of flowering plants with references to the books in which they are described, their native places and synonyms is being prepared at Kew at the expense of the family of' Charles Darwin. The published work will be entitled the Nomenclator Darwinianus. Refers to the search through 'rare and scarce periodicals in which systematic descirptions of plants occassionally occur'. Dyer requests the Council of the Society to loan as many as 20 volumes at a time to the Kew Library. Explains the loan of books in smaller quantities 'would greatly impede the process of extraction'. Refers to their 'considerable staff of transcribers' and therefore assures the loan period would not be long.
