TitleLetter from Archibald Geikie, 28 Jermyn Street, South West, to the President of the Royal Society
CreatorGeikie; Sir; Archibald (1835-1924)
Date22 May 1885
DescriptionGeikie would like to apply for a grant of £50 from the Relief Fund of the Royal Society 'in favour of Dr James Croll'. Geikie refers to Croll's current 'circumstances', a previous grant application he made on Croll's behalf, and assurances that steps are being taken to ensure a further grant application will not be necessary. Includes a note from Thomas George Bonney, President of the Geological Society, dated 23 May 1885, supporting Geikie's application on behalf of Dr Croll. Bonney refers to Croll's book 'Climate and Time' and his numerous papers and contribution to science, remarking that no 'earnest worker for science should be oppressed by ill health and' be 'anxious by poverty'.
